South spirit, let's hear it! Gonna high gear it, 'cause we got spirit!

Grier South is a house where many young men from many countries and cultures live. Grier South is the place where the youngest students grow, where they sleep and study. It's also the place where they start new friendships and the place where they get their first roommate. We're always busy! Street hockey, shooting hoops, playing chess with Mr. Wong, Hockey Night in Canada (watching the games as a house), playing soccer, tournaments in the gaming room, eating noodles after prep together, dinners at local restaurants, annual South BBQ, and finally, a gift exchange before the holiday season.

Although many students over the years have gone through South and on to senior houses, then made their way to different heights and accomplishments in the world, one recent South student is Noah Dobson, now a New York Islanders defenceman.

What's in a name

Grier House, built in 1960 (and divided into Grier North and Grier South in 1976), is named after Colonel Crawford Grier, the 19th Headmaster of BCS from 1931 to 1950. A veteran of the First World War, Col. Grier was appointed Headmaster in 1931, shortly after returning to civilian life from being an active member of the Canadian Field Artillery. From 1931 to 1942, he was an involved and proactive Head.

In February of 1942, he was appointed to the army staff at Washington with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, with Senior Housemaster F.R. Pattison taking on the duties of acting Headmaster. Shortly thereafter, Grier was named Commanding Officer of the Royal Canadian Army in 1943. That same year, he returned to BCS to perform the duties of inspecting officer at the BCS Annual Cadet Review.

Col. Grier was reinstated as Head in September 1944, remaining in this position until January 3, 1950. It was under his leadership that the BCS No. 2 Cadet Corps was outfitted in ‘Cadet Blues’ for the yearly cadet inspections.

Meet the Grier South team

My goal is to continue the education process that the school will provide, but within the residential setting. Daily life experiences, whether positive or negative, provide us opportunities to explain and teach and for the students to learn specific life lessons. Mutual respect is at the forefront of how I approach houseparenting, and that means from student to student, as well as student to adult. Our goal at the end of the day is to provide a safe and caring environment where everyone feels comfortable and can call Grier South a home away from home.Houseparent Jeff Bray
