AI Stance at BCS

We prioritize safe, responsible, and equitable AI use for all members of our community. When making decisions regarding the use of AI, we account for the following key considerations:  

• Data protection & privacy 
• Bias in training data
• Cybersecurity risks (e.g. hacking, phishing) 
• Copyright concerns (i.e. integrity) 
• Digital wellbeing and healthy boundaries with technology (AI) 

BCS’ stance emphasizes transparency, agency, inclusion, and strong digital competency.  

AI technologies are powerful, but not without environmental cost.  The committee examines both direct impacts (energy use, water consumption, e‑waste) and indirect impacts (changes in global infrastructure, cultural shifts, resource use). 

BCS wants to promote sustainable practices through, for example: 

• Community actions linked to sustainable development goals (SDGs) 
• Awareness campaigns and climate
• Climate AI initiatives like hackathons 
• An AI footprint calculator 

We evaluate where and how AI tools are used across campus, and whether they align with our values and needs. This includes ongoing surveys, inventories of tools, and clear criteria for adoption. 

AI presents opportunities to enhance learning while reinforcing the importance of       human interactions and critical thought.   

We focus on:   

• Supporting meta‑cognition and ethical reasoning 
• Improving assessments to emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and student agency 
• Democratizing learning opportunities  
• Promoting a growth mindset on how best to leverage technology (AI)  

Our plan regarding the efficient, ethical, and transparent use of AI in teaching and learning includes the following:   

• Development of an AI/digital literacy competency framework   
• Guidelines for teachers and students on integration and use  
• A traffic light system indicating when AI use is encouraged, permitted with guidance or not appropriate.   
• Training and guidance for students and professional development for teachers.
