AI Stance at BCS

Understanding the fundamentals of AI, what it is, how it works, and why it matters. 
We explore the differences between traditional AI and generative AI, as well as key topics like information use, data sharing, intellectual property, and online safety.  

We prioritize safe, responsible, and equitable AI use for all members of our community. When making decisions regarding the use of AI, we account for the following key considerations:  

• Data protection & privacy 
• Bias in training data
• Cybersecurity risks (e.g. hacking, phishing) 
• Copyright concerns (i.e. integrity) 
• Digital wellbeing and healthy boundaries with technology (AI) 

BCS’ stance emphasizes transparency, agency, inclusion, and strong digital competency.  

AI technologies are powerful, but not without environmental cost.  The committee examines both direct impacts (energy use, water consumption, e‑waste) and indirect impacts (changes in global infrastructure, cultural shifts, resource use). 

BCS wants to promote sustainable practices through, for example: 

• Community actions linked to sustainable development goals (SDGs) 
• Awareness campaigns and climate
• AI initiatives like hackathons 
• An AI footprint calculator 

We evaluate where and how AI tools are used across campus, and whether they align with our values and needs. This includes ongoing surveys, inventories of tools, and clear criteria for adoption. 

AI presents opportunities to enhance learning while reinforcing the human purpose of education. 
We will be devoting our time in focusing on the following areas:  

• Supporting meta‑cognition and ethical reasoning 
• Improving assessments to include critical thinking and creativity 
• Democratizing learning opportunities 
• Promoting a growth mindset with how best to leverage technology (AI) 

Our plan regarding the efficient, ethical, and disclosed use of AI in teaching and learning will include the following:  

• Development of an AI Literacy Skills Curriculum 
• Guidelines for teachers and students on integration and use 
• A traffic‑light system advocating for when AI use is appropriate  
• Training and guidance for students and professional development for teachers
