Recognizing Artistic Excellence

Up to twice a month, students are assessed by teachers on their approaches to learning. Effort Ratings are not about performance; they are an evaluation of a student’s self-management and collaborative skills, attitude, and general engagement. These ratings serve several purposes: they encourage students to further grow as a learner; they help identify students who may need extra attention or supervision during prep time (homework); and they keep parents informed of their child's progress.

During our Annual Review, we present the following awards to the Cadet Band.

Given in memory of Shirley Harrison Stoker, KHC ’46 and Chairman of the BCS Board from 1984-1988.
The W.A. "Pop" Page Prize for Music
Donated by John and Donald Lawrence, BCS 1949, to honour William A. (“Pop”) Page, writing teacher, games coach, exuberant organist and choir director, music and singing director of Gilbert and Sullivan productions, and Preparatory School Headmaster, 1935-1949.

The Prize for Theatre Arts
The Hewson Prize for Music
Named to honour Dorothy Hewson and her 36 years of teaching Music at KHC and BCS.

This award is presented to the student(s) who has demonstrated a good attitude, dedication, and leadership, in the Choir.

In recognition of the long and outstanding service to the School of the late Bertha Bell, organist and music teacher, an award pin was designed by Col. J. Strickland for presentation to senior students who have contributed by maintaining a high standard of personal and public performance over several years.

Donated by Michael and Susan Riddell to the student(s) who, in the opinion of the members of the Players Club, have made the greatest contribution to Drama at BCS during the year.

Founded by the Hon. and Mrs. Adrian Knatchbull Hugessen in memory of their son, Kenneth, BCS, l936-l941. 

Donated by Grant Johnston, a BCS old boy and poet, and named for his father. This prize is awarded annually to the student who has produced the best collection of poetry during the school year.

Donated by Mrs. Judith Ross in memory of her daughter, Diane, a student at BCS from 1982-84.  The prize is awarded annually to the student who has excelled in creative writing and has been actively involved in the extra-curricular life of the school.

Presented by the Old Boys’ Association in memory of J. Anthony Awde, BCS 1963-68, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident during his first year at McGill University. Tony Awde overcame a speech handicap during his years at BCS and was one of our accomplished public speakers and Chapel readers by the time he reached his senior year.  He actually won the Headmaster’s prize for Reading in Chapel.
