Challenging assumptions

On Monday afternoon, Mr. Coughlin met with the Debating Club for an Ethics Bowl—a competitive event where students discuss cases dealing with moral issues and dilemmas.

“It’s a competitive team activity, but unlike traditional debate, students work to collaborate with opposing teams to arrive at the most complete possible understanding of the issues and dilemmas,” explained Mr. Coughlin. “Some of the cases we’re looking at deal with issues of equality and equity, corporate philanthropy, friendship and citizenship, and the legitimate roles of robots and AI in our society.” It's always inspiring to see students engaging in meaningful conversations that explore difficult topics and challenge them to think differently. Debating not only helps students to develop their speaking and critical thinking skills, but it also teaches them to respect and understand different perspectives.

Help us wish these club members luck as they prepare for a virtual Ontario Ethics Bowl on February 4.
