Denim Day
[TW: SA]
Our community wore jeans today for Denim Day—an international demonstration against sexual assault.
In the fall, three BCS students approached Ms. Lowry about swapping out their uniforms for jeans to participate in what is the longest running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history. The Student Life Department didn't hesitate to inform the full school community and we subsequently had teachers and staff switching out their usual attire for jeans, too.
Denim Day derives from an Italian court ruling in the '90s that overturned a rape conviction due to the fact that the victim was wearing tight jeans thereby implying consent. Following the court case, women in the Italian Parliament arrived to work in jeans to show support of the victim. Not long after, Peace over Violence created Denim Day to protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence and clothing options. Today, millions of people all over the world wear jeans on the last Wednesday of April for Denim Day.
For anyone seeking immediate support, the Sherbrooke sexual violence crisis hotline is 1-877-563-0793. Our School Counsellor, Ms. Marie-Noëlle, is also always available to our full community. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
