Ferning with curiosity

Our Form II students spent three memorable days at the Kenauk Institute for their annual nature camp with Mr. Madsen, Ms. Rowell, and Mr. Manning.

When the adventurers arrived to Kenauk, they settled into their cabin and played a few games. Later that evening students learned how to start a fire and then enjoyed s'mores to compensate for their hard work. "We teach kids not to play with knives or to start fires—yet there we were on the beach, 'ok, here is a knife to shave off magnesium but don’t hurt yourself. Now take this flint and go start a fire,'" joked Mr. Madsen.

Day two was a busy day of exploring; our students toured a fish hatchery, explored a lake by kayak, and participated in a scavenger hunt in nature. "At the fish farm, the kids were offered to try the fish food," said Ms. Rowell. "We were the first group to say 'sure, I will try some.' And they sure did." Plenty of wildlife was observed during the day, including bald eagles, a turkey vulture, and beavers.

On day three, everyone had to pack up and head back to BCS. "The kids were amazing throughout the trip–they are a special group and I really look forward to seeing them moving through the school," shared Ms. Rowell. "The trip was an excellent way for the Form II students to bond together as a group and learn about our natural environment. They showed off what they learned in science class this year and learned more about different species found in Quebec," shared Mr. Manning.

Thank you to the Executive Director of the institute, Liane Nowell, and all the teachers who helped organize and chaperone the trip for our Form II students. Parents—head to Flickr to see photos from the trip!
