Figuring out figures

Ms. Lamb's Form III Mathematics class recently participated in a fascinating activity centred on human body ratios.

The activity involved tracing the outline of a student on a large sheet of paper and completing a comprehensive ratio sheet. The sheet required the students to measure various parts of their body, such as arm span, height, and waist, and calculate the ratios between them. In addition to the student ratio sheet, the class also completed a figurine ratio sheet using their assigned toy—such as a doll or action figure. The figurine ratio sheet required the students to measure the different parts of their figurine and calculate the ratios between them.

The next step of the activity involves scaling up the figurine measurements and drawing a life-size model over the student's outline. This will enable the class to compare the ratios of the figurine to those of the student's body, providing a better understanding of the unrealistic human body proportions depicted in figurines.
