Francophonie Week | Semaine de la Francophonie
From March 16 to 20, 2026, the French teachers at BCS organized Francophonie Week, a special celebration dedicated to the French language and the richness and diversity of the francophone world.

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to discover and engage with different aspects of francophone culture through a variety of activities organized by the French department.
About Francophonie Week
Each year in March, many schools and organizations around the world take part in Francophonie Week, a time dedicated to celebrating the French language and the many cultures that share it. The week is connected to International Francophonie Day, celebrated on March 20, and highlights the global presence of French, which is spoken across Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia. It is an opportunity to recognize not only the language itself, but also the diversity of traditions, histories, and artistic expressions found throughout the francophone world.
The French teachers at BCS organized a series of activities to mark this occasion and encourage our students to explore different aspects of francophone culture.
Discovering the Francophone World
In honour of Francophonie week, students prepared and delivered presentations in chapel, sharing topics related to the francophone world. This gave other students the opportunity to learn more about different countries and regions of the francophone world. Presentations explored elements such as French culture, traditions, and famous French figures. Upcoming BCS trips to francophone countries were also presented.
To make learning interactive, students also participated in a general culture quiz about the francophone world. The quiz encouraged them to test their knowledge while discovering new facts about the global presence of French.
Bringing Literature to Life
One of the highlights of the week was from John Dorval, French Teacher at BCS. In his French class, Form II - VII students filmed a short video adaptation of the fables from Jean de La Fontaine, dressing in costumes and acting out the story themselves.
The video was later shown during chapel, giving the entire school community a chance to enjoy the students’ work and see French literature brought to life in a fun and engaging way.
Celebrating the French Language
Classrooms also incorporated activities that highlighted francophone culture, including film viewings and music. These activities allowed them to explore different cultural perspectives and better understand the diversity of French-speaking communities around the world.
Music was another important element of the celebration. Our organist and Choir Director, Maryse Simard, gathered suggestions of francophone songs and played them throughout the week during our chapel morning assemblies. On Wednesday, our very own Samuel Z. played piano - Comptine d'un autre Été by French musician and composer Yann Tiersen.
Overall, Francophonie Week at BCS offered our students an opportunity to see French not only as a subject studied in class, but also as a living language that connects cultures and communities across the globe.
