Grand adventure

Maeve MacLachlan, BCS '20, shared her Outward Bound experience with us in chapel last week.

Kurt Hahn, an inspired educator, developed the Outward Bound program because he believed that it was important for students to develop their inner abilities beyond the classroom. Established and funded by Bart MacDougall, BCS’54, in 2005, our Outward Bound Canada Award is awarded to a student in Form V who most exemplifies “self-reliance, care, and respect for others, service to the community, and concern for the environment.”

Last week Maeve spoke to our students about her experience participating in an Outward Bound Rocky Mountain 21-Day Backpacking trip in the summer of 2018. Over the three weeks, Maeve and a group of other students from all over the world learned self-reliance, empathy, and teamwork while living in the challenging natural environment of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks. A highlight from her trip? Hiking an impressive 133 kilometres over the 21 days.
