One smell swoop

Mrs. Vanier's Form VII Chemistry class filled the lab with pleasant fragrances yesterday morning.

With carboxylic acid, alcohol, and a catalyst to speed up the reaction, our students were able to prepare esters that produced different scents. With their lab partners, everyone received a lab manual that had the instructions to make either an orange, apple, strawberry, or banana scent. The alcohol beakers were labelled one through four which determined the smell each eventual mixture would have. With each experiment and their corresponding carboxylic acids and alcohols, students followed all the necessary steps to synthesize the ester to be able to have a final product. The icing on the cake was being able to waft the reaction at the end of the experiment and determine which of the four fruit fragrances were produced.

Smells like a great time to us!
