One step at a time

Today, our Form VII students had the privilege of hearing from a distinguished speaker, Jared Fishman. Mr. Fishman is not only a BCS parent but also the founder and executive director of Justice Innovation Lab, a Professorial Lecturer in Law at George Washington University Law School, and the author of Fire on the Levee: The Murder of Henry Glover and the Search for Justice After Hurricane Katrina. His talk, titled "What Will It Take to Fix the World," focused on actionable steps to create meaningful change in our communities and beyond.

Mr. Fishman outlined a comprehensive process to guide us towards impactful change:

  • What do you value? Start by questioning the "why" behind your actions to align your efforts with what truly matters to you.
  • Count the right things. In an era where technology allows us to measure almost anything, it's crucial to ensure we're measuring the right things.
  • Deconstruct the system. Achieving desired outcomes requires understanding how different parts of a system interact.
  • Approach change with humility. Embrace a hypothesis mindset, ready to pivot if your initial solution doesn't work.
  • Expand your worldview. A human-centered approach begins with meeting people where they are and engaging constructively with diverse perspectives to foster innovation.

We are grateful to Mr. Fishman for sharing his insights and inspiring our students to think critically about how they can contribute to fixing the world. His visit underscored the importance of values, accurate measurement, systemic understanding, humility, and broad perspectives in driving meaningful change. Thank you, Mr. Fishman, for joining us and sharing your insights! Special appreciation goes to our Corporate and Community Relations Officer, Mr. Patrick Houston, for facilitating this enriching experience for our students.
