Operation Backpack
Daphne Nelson, a familiar face in the BCS community, recently paid a visit to collect water bottles for this year’s 'Operation Backpack.' A community organization made up of a group of six dedicated volunteers, Operation Backpack has been serving the community for the past eight years. Their primary mission is to supply backpacks and essential school supplies to families in need at Lennoxville Elementary School (LES) and Alexander Galt Regional High School (AGRHS).
Since their inception, they have provided support to 100+ families annually, ensuring their children are 'equipped to learn.' "We set up a booth during Orientation Day and the first day of school," Daphne shared. "The children get the opportunity to choose their own backpack, and we provide them with the necessary supplies. It truly empowers them to start the school year strong."
This year they are introducing a new addition to their offerings: water bottles. This addition came about in response to requests from teachers who have observed that many children lack a water bottle to bring along on field trips. By including water bottles, Operation Backpack aims to address this essential need. Our Advancement Team was happy to donate over 50 water bottles for the cause, with plans of organizing a dress down day in the upcoming school year to provide additional support.
Interested in getting involved? Cash donations of any size are most welcome and can be made by cheque payable to ‘Operation Backpack’ and sent to Lennoxville United Church (6 Church Street Sherbrooke, QC J1M 1S9).
