Order in the court
Form VII students in Mr. St-Amant's Law class ran a real-life trial case in the chapel this afternoon.
Assuming the roles of lawyers, witnesses, and the jury, students reenacted the case of R. vs Wilson after lunch. Tension and nerves ran high in the courtroom as the witnesses and the accused were questioned. The court heard both the Crown's and the defence’s opening and closing statements, witness testimonials, and the accused's testimony, with Justice St-Amant and court clerk William presiding over the proceedings.
The project started five years ago in the first Law class, and every year, the students are given a case to analyze to hold the mock trial. Mr. St-Amant believes the trials are a valuable opportunity to encourage students to recognize criminal acts in a more lighthearted context.
