Stop and smell the fruits

Ms. Vanier's Form VII IB Chemistry class conducted a lab on fragrant esters.

By mixing carboxylic acid (RCOOH), alcohol (R’OH), and a catalyst in a reflux apparatus, students were able to produce fragrances of apple, wintergreen, banana, and strawberry. Students worked with their lab partners to carefully combine and heat the liquids for 30 minutes. The result was a fruity smell that could be wafted from the reflux apparatus.

Chemistry is one of the four International Baccalaureate (IB) science courses at BCS. More information about the IB program can be found on our website.
