Treaties and Reconciliation

For the past few weeks, Mr. McCormick's Form V History of Quebec and Canada class has been exploring topics such as Indigenous self-government, land claim movements, and processes of reconciliation in Canada.

Today, his students held a Symposium on Treaties and Reconciliation. "They have been hard at work researching the treaties signed between First Nations and the Canadian government in the 19th century (known collectively as the Numbered Treaties), and have prepared posters on the ongoing consequences and impact of these treaties," explained Mr. McCormick.

For their poster presentations, students worked in teams to pick one of seven treaties and answered the following questions to display.

  1. What nations signed this treaty?
  2. What nations’ homeland does this treaty cover?
  3. What were the terms of the treaty? For the government? For First Nations?
  4. Examples of reservations/Indigenous communities today on the territory
  5. Have those treaties been honoured?
  6. History of residential schools in the territory
  7. What steps toward reconciliation are ongoing in the treaty area?

Great job to all our students who presented their posters today and thank you to everyone who stopped by to celebrate and learn from their hard work.
