Surviving English class

Nov. 16, 2016 | Throughout the last few weeks, Form II and III English as a Second Language students have been reading Gary Paulsen’s famous 1987 novel Hatchet.

The book tells the story of Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy forced to survive alone in Northern Canada. To deepen their understanding of the book, Ms. Laramée assigned each student a precise aspect of the story to illustrate: a map of Brian’s camp, the animals he encountered, his equipment, and more. Their artwork is now displayed on a board outside the classroom, also serving as a visual association tool. Survival AND English skills, all in one class!
