Peaceful drums

Jan. 18, 2017 | A special guest started our day off with a memorable performance this morning.

Continuing our celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's legacy, students and staff were greeted by Djembe drum music as they arrived in Chapel. Togo-born percussionist Matthieu Anku sang along while he played the traditonal Togolese songs during his performance. It is said that a skilled djembe drummer can make the drum "speak" and tell an emotional story. The name of the drum comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé", which means "everyone gather together in peace".
