Handling stress and anxiety

Mar. 31, 2017 | Guest speaker Tamara Schwager from Ometz Counselling joined us today, speaking with students about stress and anxiety.

In her 50-minute sessions with all Forms, the
Certified Family Life Educator covered the difference between stress and anxiety, and how the impact of those two reactions can affect our physical bodies, our thoughts and feelings, and our behaviour. She began her presentation by discussing hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, released by our bodies as basic survival mechanisms. She reminded our students that a great deal of stress and anxiety can be eased by practical and simple actions such as drinking water and exercising daily – both of which are equally important for physical and mental health. Ms. Schwager ended her passionate dialogue by sharing 10 helpful tips and techniques to manage stress and anxiety on a daily basis:

1. Avoid excessive intake of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
2. Engage in physical activity
3. Get more (and better) sleep!
4. Use Relaxation Techniques
5. Talk to someone
6. Keep a Stress Log
7. Take control
8. Manage your time well
9. Learn to say NO
10. Get the rest you need
