Included in that full house were some current faculty and staff members who have been here for over 30 years, students and parents who represent four and five generations of their family coming to BCS, and, of course, quite a number who spent their very first night on campus on Tuesday. This year we welcomed 109 new students who represent among them 23 different countries and 15 languages. It is wonderful to see our student body grow each year, making us a richer and more global community. BCS is thriving in literally every possible way you can measure, with the most significant of those being of course our students—your children. They represent the strongest, most diverse, talented, and capable group of students our Admissions team could find—and they spanned the globe to bring us all together. From many, they chose your child, your family.
Many of you have shared with us that you were drawn to BCS due to the excellence in programming: the IB program, our high achieving athletics programs, the strength of our performing and studio arts, the thriving internationalism of our community, and our love of the great Canadian outdoors—which we had a chance to dive into just yesterday with our annual hike up Mount Orford
. We are proud to be recognized as one of the premier family-style boarding schools in North America and intend to ensure that is the case for generations to come. With all that we do, we are embracing the best practices of holistic 21st
Century education to ensure your child will be prepared, when they move on from BCS, to take on all the great challenges they will encounter.
These are exciting times at BCS, as we continue to evolve, planning and executing the growth of our programs, of our pedagogy, and of our campus. We have a full campus framework advancing, and you will be witness this year to some of the first components of that plan. Just next week fencing will go up as we embark upon a nine-month construction project of a 24,000 square foot, $8 million new residence: Mitchell Family House. A new Tennis Courts Complex will also break ground in just a few weeks, and our plans for improving campus traffic flow and parking are all underway. How will you merge with this? What questions will it raise for you and your child? Inspiration comes in many interesting forms, but if architecture, engineering, construction, landscaping, planning—or even just big trucks and cranes—are of interest, get curious! Ask questions and let’s learn together.
As I often say, our students’ pursuit of excellence, in all aspects of their lives, will be their legacy. Our prefects arrived at the end of August to prepare for the year ahead, and many returning student leaders were here on Opening Day to help welcome the new students. Those efforts were born out of a commitment to a greater good that will benefit all of us and help to define how we interact. We are building something truly special: our family-style community. During the next ten months, we create a life cycle—a unique BCS ecosystem and culture that will never be exactly the same again. A year in the life cycle of BCS defined by and for US.
To our new families, welcome. To our returning families, welcome back. There is a big machine that is starting up right now as we begin a new school year. There is great energy, enthusiasm, and a belief that this is going to be a truly remarkable experience. I encourage you all to join us and dive in.
