Self-care isn’t just for Sundays
Nov. 1, 2018 | Tamara Schwager joined us today to speak about stress and anxiety.
Throughout the day today, Tamara held hour-long sessions with each Form to discuss the psychology and physiology of stress along with practical ways to manage it in students’ day-to-day routines. After a brief grounding activity, she began each talk with an explanation of how our bodies evolved the fight-or-flight stress response as hunter-gatherers to protect ourselves against predators. While we still exhibit the same response, it's markedly less practical for stressors in 2018. “You can't run away from a term paper, it will still be due” Tamara explained, “and you can't fight a ministry exam, you have to write it.” She followed up the visual with practical tips for students to manage anxiety: from time management to relaxation techniques. Even our staff and faculty were treated to an early-morning personal development session about dealing with stressors in the workplace.
"It's really important to know yourself and know your limits” she encouraged Form VII students in one of the morning sessions. "Understanding when to take a break doesn't mean you're weak, it means you're self-aware."
