Apr. 4, 2019 | Science and Technology students got destructive today in the name of engineering.
Ms. Lamb's Form II class was hard at work this afternoon using screwdrivers, pliers, and brute force to take apart small toys. As part of their technology unit, the students explored linking characteristics used in the manufacturing process to hold the pieces of the toys together. They then had to identify the type of link using vocabulary they had learned in class, noting whether it was rigid or flexible, direct or indirect, incomplete or complete, and removeable or non-removeable. "Most of these concepts wouldn't normally be studied until Form V," explained Ms. Lamb. An important part of identifying the toy involved destroying it, which sometimes involved a bit of creativity. "Science is definitely more fun when you're taking things apart," commented Emma after crushing a piece of her magic wand under her feet to unglue its components. Edward was particularly meticulous in his deconstruction, successfully taking apart his mechanically powered car and then reassembling it to a fully functioning state. Whatever their strategy, it was clear this was a highlight of the course.
Their next project is said to involve Lego, which should be much easier to dismantle!
