The field guide to authorship

May 6, 2020 | With our move to online content, it's been easier than ever to host guest speakers from around the world!

In April, we shared about a solar technology expert joining Ms. Rowell's IB Physics class through the magic of video conferencing. Our faculty has continued to take advantage of their classroom technologies to host more leading minds in their fields.

Today in Mrs. Carey's Form II and III English Language Arts class, students were treated to a lively discussion with New York–based writer Ben Philippe. Over the past several weeks, students have been reading his latest young adult (YA) novel, The Field Guide to the North American Teenager, and using it as a foundation for several of their class discussions. Their online meeting this morning comprised of a discussion about students' likes and dislikes about the book, followed by a question and answer period. Emma, Alistair, and Evan inquired about the inspiration behind different elements of the novel, while Alex, Emile, and Sara were more broadly interested in Mr. Philippe's career. Toward the end of the meeting, the conversation expanded to a discussion about the author's favourite books, music, and television shows. To the question about books, he was quick to recommend the work of Jeff Zentner and Angie Thomas, whom he referred to as his "two YA baes."

As the engaging talk drew on into the students' lunchtime, Mrs. Carey thanked Mr. Philippe for taking the time to meet with her class and made sure to invite him to campus once the situation would allow it.
