CAIS by case

BCS Athletics News
Our Senior Rugby teams were in Hamilton, Ontario, over the weekend for the CAIS Invitational Rugby Tournament hosted by Hillfield Strathallan College.
Despite the prolonged winter weather keeping our teams from practising outside, they got off to a great start with both teams winning their first games. The Senior Girls won 10-5 vs our hosts and the boys won 20-0 vs Greenwood College School where their fitness shined through in the second period to protect the 20-0 lead. Both our teams finished day one with 2-1 records, winning game one and losing game two (Senior Girls losing 22-12 vs Ridley College and Senior Boys falling 14-12 vs Hillfield Strathallan College), with both teams rebounding by winning game three of the day. The Senior Boys posted 14-10 vs Ridley College and the girls won 4 tries to 2 vs Country Day School.

A rainy day two saw our Senior Girls fall 20-0 vs Trinity College School and finishing pool play with a 29-0 loss vs Hillfield Strathallan College despite their valiant efforts particularly on defense. The Senior Boys team dominated performance, defeating UCC 28-5 and SAC 7 tries to 0, giving them a 4-1 record and putting them through to the semi-finals against our hosts.

The Senior Girls played their final game on day three, putting up a solid effort with extended periods controlling the ball and threatening the opponents’ line but unfortunately came up short vs Trinity College School 15-5. Despite their losses, Coach David Hunt is optimistic that the team will see success in the remainder of the season. “All the girls gained valuable game-time and showed rapidly developing rugby skills which should serve them well going into league play. We are very proud of their attitude, effort and sportsmanship and look forward to seeing their successes in the weeks to come.” Coach Susan Magwood added, “The girls showed a lot of positive aspects this weekend despite coming away with a 2-4 record. We have a lot of new players on the team and CAIS was the first chance they had to play together. They improved from one game to the next and we finished the tournament a better team than we started.”

On the final day of the tournament the Senior Boys secured their spot in the finals with a big 21-0 win over Hillfield Strathallan College. They took the field in the Championship 7’s game and had a very close game, but unfortunately lost to Ridley College 7-5. “Overall the outcome of the weekend was pleasing and sets high expectations moving forward for the rest of the season,” said Coaches James Andrews, Tyler Murphy, and Josh Bray of the Senior Boys performance. “We look forward to building off their success moving forward throughout the month of May.”

Our Academic Coach, Shelley Gardner-Bray, travelled with the team to make sure they kept up with their school work and was impressed by the team’s efforts both on and off the pitch. “All represented BCS with pride, great performance and positive attitudes. This carried over to their academic preps and performance as well, throughout the tournament. Professionally speaking you couldn’t have asked for more, walking off the pitch after winning or losing, full gear, muddy head to toe, yet settling down for a prep session with little complaints.”

Overall, our Athletic Director, Jeff Bray, was extremely pleased with the results of the tournament. “There was very little time to prepare for this tournament, so both our teams should be very proud of their results. Our Senior Boys team really made an impression and any time a small school like BCS can make a CAIS final, it is certainly something to be extremely proud of.”

Both our teams take on Séminaire de Sherbrooke and Massey-Vanier Regional High School this Wednesday, May 1. We wish our Bears the best of luck! Make sure to follow us on Twitter for game dates and scores.
