You can count on him

Last week we welcomed Colin Chapman as our fourth Scholar-in-Residence. Colin joined us from Australia, where he was recently appointed to the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership as a Master Teacher.

An expert in the field of computational mathematics, he has taught and led workshops across the world, including in China, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, and Canada. Colin is passionate about teaching and learning practices that bridge design practices, from the practical to modelling, and theory in ways that stimulate learning and unleash the joy of experimentation and discovery.

Thank you, Colin, for joining us on Moulton Hill to share your passion and expertise, and leading the following workshops with both teachers and students:

Teacher Workshop
- Work on the necessity to be practitioners, not describers, of Mathematics.
- Enhancing computational thinking in mathematics at BCS: the skills we want our students to develop.

Mathematics classes with students
Form II/ Grade 7 and Form III/ Grade 8:
- Work on extended explorations of the implementation of logic structure in algorithms to collect and process data and effect responses.
- Minimal explicit teaching, with the focus being on problem-solving and solution interrogation in computation.

Form IV/ Grade 9 and Form V/ Grade 10:
- Work on algorithm-informed, single page, unplugged proofs of summation of infinite geometric series for specific cases, developing general solutions for all cases.
- Introduction of simple programming tasks for measurement and response through IF, …THEN logic structures.
